A Mild Halloween Is on the Way

If you are thinking about moving to Atlanta, Halloween is a good chance to see how our fall weather feels in real life. As of this writing, the forecast for Woodstock on Saturday, October 31 shows a high in the low 70s and an overnight low in the mid-50s. That adds up to a comfortable evening for trick-or-treating, with a light layer handy for later.

What Halloween Is Usually Like in Atlanta

Atlanta's typical Halloween high sits near 70 degrees, which puts this year's forecast a touch above the norm. The date can swing quite a bit from one year to the next. Halloween 2016 set a record high of 86 degrees, topping the 85 degrees recorded in 1961. In 2017, a National Weather Service forecast for the Covington area had temperatures falling through the low 60s by 7 p.m., with lows in the 40s overnight. A Channel 2 Action News meteorologist also noted in 2016 that Atlanta has had some pretty cold Halloweens.

Temperatures Across North Georgia

Conditions can also differ across the region. Early on Halloween morning in 2016, it was 63 degrees in Atlanta, 50 in Griffin, and 46 in Blairsville. Heading north in the fall can mean noticeably cooler air, which is worth knowing if a weekend in the mountains is on your list.

How It Compares With Colder Places

For anyone coming from the Northeast or Midwest, the contrast can be real. New York City's typical Halloween high is around 60 degrees with a low near 40, according to NY1's weather team. Farther north, Caribou, Maine, has an average Halloween high near 47, and light snow fell in Buffalo, New York, on Halloween in 2023. Warm Halloweens do happen up north too. In 2024, New York City was forecast to reach the mid- to upper 70s, far above normal.

Up north, a cold October 31 often lets the coat decide the costume, and some outfits are never seen at all. A typical Atlanta night leaves a full-length princess gown or a fitted superhero suit in plain view, with a light layer added later if the air cools. By comparison, this year's overnight low in Woodstock should stay well above what New York City typically sees.

Dressing for the Evening

Temperatures ease down after dark, so a light layer in the bag is a smart idea. Sunset on Saturday is at 6:46 p.m. Rain chances rise later in the evening, but the forecast shows only about a 25 percent chance, and forecasts change, so an umbrella or poncho is a low-effort backup. Layers you can take off work well for the early part of the evening.

Clocks Fall Back That Night

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, when clocks move back one hour. That makes Halloween evening the last night on daylight time, and the sun sets earlier starting Sunday. Saturday night carries a bonus hour, so the party can run a little longer or the sleep can run a little deeper. Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time year-round, so clearly, the change does not apply there.
